Great Sand Dunes National Park

Location:

Colorado (about a 4 hour drive south from Denver)

Lodging:

Great Sand Dunes Lodge in the Park

Best thing we did:

Climb to the top of the Dunes

We were blown away by how massive the Dunes were and how many more were not visible until we climbed to the highest one and then saw the other side. AMAZING. Brutal climb to the top. (just think:, work for 1 minute and then rest to catch your breath. You sink back down on every step a little). Also it’s a much higher altitude there. So you’ll be huffing and puffing. Make sure to wear tennis shoes and not flip flops because the sand can get up to 140 degrees on a sunny day. We climbed in the early morning and on an overcast day.
Activities: 1) Sand sledding and sand boarding down the dunes! So so fun! You can rent the equipment there in the Park. 2) Play in the Medano Creek

First thing we did was head to Medano Creek. The snow on the mountains in the distance melt during the summer months and create this creek in the valley where the sand shifts every few seconds and creates waves in the creek. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen (which is why it’s a National Park.)
Traveler Tip: Bring mosquito repellent or you’ll get eaten alive! It was crazy how many mosquitoes there were! They ran out of repellent in all the stores in the park when we were there. Yikes.

Takeaway: One of the best recreational National Parks we’ve been to thus far. So fun for the family! Stay to watch the sunset over the Dunes if you can. It’s breathtaking. The pictures don’t do it justice. God is awesome!!

Romans 1:20 CSB
How countless are Your works, Lord! In wisdom You have made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures. Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures beyond number- living things both large and small.
Psalm 104:24-25 CSB
Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and all that fills it resound. Let the fields and everything in them exult. Then all the trees of the forest will shout for joy
Psalm 96:11-12 CSB
All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.
John 1:3 CSB
But ask the animals, and they will instruct you; [ask] the birds of the sky, and they will tell you. Or speak to the earth, and it will instruct you; let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? The life of every living thing is in His hand, as well as the breath of all mankind.
